What is PIPA testing?

PIPA stands for the Professional Inflatable Play Association. The PIPA testing scheme creates a structured framework for ensuring the safety and compliance of inflatable play equipment. Inspectors follow inspection criteria based on HSE guidelines. The scheme gives assurance that inspectors are competent to assess inflatable devices.

Why test your inflatables?

  • Legal requirement: All inflatable equipment used for hire & reward must be routinely inspected by a competent person under health & safety law.
  • Safety first: Regular testing reduces risk of injury and equipment failure.
  • Compliance evidence: PIPA inspection records demonstrate due diligence to clients and regulators.
  • Manufacturer requirements: Brand new inflatables should have an initial manufacturer test. Many UK manufacturers now use a PIPA inspector for this initial inspection to ensure compliance with BS EN 14960.

What can be tested under the PIPA scheme?

PIPA covers inflatables with a constant air design intended for bouncing or sliding. It does not cover sealed units. Current device types include:

  • Bouncy Castles
  • Inflatable Slides
  • Bounce & Slide Combinations
  • Obstacle Courses
  • Enclosed Inflatables
  • Soft Mountains
  • Multi-play Centres

Non Ride-On Games now included

The PIPA scheme has expanded to cover non ride-on inflatable games. These are constant-air units where users interact briefly without getting on or into the device. Examples include:

  • Football Shootouts
  • Archery & Shooting Ranges
  • Basketball Hoops
  • Bowling Alleys
  • Dartboards

Initial tests and BS EN 14960

Brand new inflatables should receive an initial inspection from the manufacturer or a qualified inspector. Most UK manufacturers provide the initial PIPA inspection to confirm compliance with BS EN 14960. This standard sets safety and performance requirements for inflatable play equipment.
